What is AGA?
AGA (Androgenetic Alopeia) is the most common alopecia in men and is "male pattern baldness". It is characterized by the fact that the hair on either the hairline of the forehead and the crown, or both, gradually becomes thinner and shorter, and the hair gradually becomes thinner. It is said that AGA is related to male hormones and heredity.
How hair grows
Hair is made up of "hair matrix cells" that are located in the deep "hairballs" of what are called "hair follicles." Hair matrix cells take in nutrients and oxygen from capillaries and repeat cell division to make hair and grow it.
Normal hair cycle
Hair does not continue to grow, but repeats a "growth period," "regression period," and "rest period." In other words, if the "growth period" in which hair matrix cells divide and hair grows continues for 2 to 6 years, The hairballs begin to regress in the "regression period", and finally the hairballs completely degenerate and the hair does not grow in the "rest period". Then, in the growing season, new hair begins to grow, and old hair naturally falls off. This cycle is called the "hair cycle". (Figure below)
AGA Hair Cycle
In AGA, one of the male hormones, "dihydrotestosterone (DHT)", causes the growth period to last only a few months to a year. Therefore, it does not grow sufficiently and thin and short hair (vellus hair) increases. Also, as the proportion of hair in telogen increases, more hair will fall out. For this reason, AGA makes hair thin.

Medical treatment (drug treatment)
・ Finasteride, dutasteride
It is a drug that suppresses the production of dihydrotestosterone, which is the cause of AGA. As a result, the growth period of the hair is extended, and the number of thick and healthy hair increases. It usually takes 6 months to feel the effect, so take it continuously every day.
・ Minoxidil: medicine to take
By taking minoxidil orally, it acts directly on the hair follicles and promotes hair growth. However, since the main mechanism of action acts on the cardiovascular system, drug management under the supervision of a doctor who can diagnose cardiovascular side effects is required.
